Forever Is The Air Between Us: Estelle Tcha Solo Exhibiton
In her solo exhibition Forever Is The Air Between Us, Estelle Tcha moves beyond the concept of yeongsaeng (永生, eternal life) explored in her previous series, expanding her inquiry toward the question of yeongwon (永遠, eternity) itself. Eternal life has been a perennial human wish, yet reality is in constant flux. Bodies, landscapes, people, memories all repeat cycles of emergence and dissolution. What, then, could eternity possibly mean for us?
Tcha does not seek eternity in any single form. Instead, she turns her attention to the air, that which moves ceaselessly between forms, passing from one entity to another. Air precedes every being and outlasts them all. It never reveals itself, yet it envelops all life. It is the site where movement arises, the field through which gi (氣, energy) flows.
In this exhibition, Tcha turns in particular to the sipjangsaeng (十長生, Ten Symbols of Longevity), traditional Korean emblems of immortal life, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens. The sun and clouds, mountains and water, pine and mushroom of eternal youth, crane and deer, turtle and rock: each embodies a different form and span of life. Departing from traditional illustrations, she reimagines them not as isolated entities but as interconnected beings forming a single organic current. What makes this movement and relation possible is the invisible presence of the air. Ultimately, they share one breath of cyclicality.
Air possesses no form of its own, yet it holds every form. Belonging to no single thing, it courses between beings, connecting life to life, time to time, beginning to end. The unseen currents of gi, too, move within this field, where all emergence and dissolution pass through one another. Eternity, then, is not understood here as unchanging time. Rather, the artist asks whether it might be closer to the continuity of air—the invisible field that makes change possible even as all things transform and disappear, gathering them into one cycle of being. This reflection extends the concept of “Cyclicality” that has long anchored her practice. Existence does not persist independently; beings shape and are shaped by one another, carried forward in relation. Every ending becomes another beginning, and every disappearance becomes the ground for new emergence.
This recognition marked a turn toward surrender in Tcha's engagement with nature: she allows herself to be carried by this flow, regarding herself as a vessel among vessels within the landscape of life. Painting, for Tcha, is the effort to hold these unseen flows within a single plane.
For Tcha, every life is finite in its own way, yet the air remembers everything it has ever held. Perhaps what we call eternity is not the long endurance of any one being, but a single breath that gathers all that exists and passes it on to what comes next. Between the accumulated layers of her canvas, life continues to breathe.
